2020 Toyota Prius i-Tech. “Living with Bowen” – Week 2!

April 8, 2021

“I’m a drive till it’s practically empty’ type of a gal”.

The Toyota Prius I-Tech is now into week two of “Living with Bowen”. This week it was my wife living with the tech-heavy and frugal i-Tech Prius.

Take note!

2021 Toyota Prius i-Tech review

by Chris Bowen | Radio 2SM and The Super Radio Network

Dear Diary

Here are the vital stats for Week 1, they will continuously updated weekly.

  • Odometer reading: 4219km up 724km
  • Living with Bowen kms: 740.2km up 723.7km
  • Fuel economy: 4.1km/100k down from 5.5L/100km
  • Range: 833km

What the missus thinks

I LOVE seat heaters. Yay for a seat heater! I also love seeing a car with a huge range when you fill it up, the Prius ticks that box too. I’m a ‘drive till it’s practically empty’ type of a gal so I like having heaps of kilometres up my sleeve. And I have my fuel economy efforts to also thank for that, I’m goooood at getting it very low (see above).

It’s odd not having a display that you can see right in front of your steering wheel. I didn’t think I would like having it centred where the air con vents are, but I’ve got use to it and now it seems very normal. You can still see the speed limit in the head-up display. I’ll have to ask The Bowen why Toyota has chosen to move it to the centre…

And it feels smooth to drive, I know, I know, soo technical. Not.

Value for money

This is where things get a bit dicey for the Prius i-Tech.

It starts off at $45,350 before on-roads. There are seven colours on offer, Frosted White, Silver Pearl, Graphite, Eclipse Black, Blue Gem (As tested) or Feverish Red. All add an extra $500. To skip that you’ll need to ask for the base Glacier White.

A quick build for our loaner on the Toyota website estimated a $50,668 drive-away price.

Being the i-Tech model, you’d expect a technology onslaught.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • Keyless entry with push button start
  • Advanced climate control air conditioning
  • LCD Multi Information Display
  • Head-Up Display
  • Auto-dimming rear view mirror
  • 10-speaker JBL premium sound system
  • Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
  • Satellite navigation
  • DAB Radio
  • Wireless phone charger

Safety and technology go hand-in-hand these days, the Prius i-Tech doesn’t cut any corners.

Key features include:

  • Lane Trace Assist
  • Lane Departure Alert with steering assist
  • Pre-Collision Safety system with pedestrian (day and night) and cyclist (day) detection
  • Speed Sign Assist
  • Automatic High Beam
  • Active Cruise Control
  • Anti-lock Braking System with Electronic Brake-force Distribution and Brake Assist
  • Vehicle Stability Control
  • Traction Control and Hill-start Assist Control
  • LED tail lamps with Emergency Brake Signal
  • Reversing camera with moving guidelines
  • Blind Spot Monitor
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Seven SRS airbags – including driver’s knee airbag
